“Our bodies were printed as blank pages to be filled with the ink of our hearts.” — Michael Biondi

Did you ever play with invisible ink as a kid or learn about how important it was to secret communications from the American Revolution through both World Wars?

Invisible ink has actually been used since the 4th century BC. People discovered they could write invisible messages with one substance and then reveal the words or symbols with a special decoding substance or process. Secret messages created with invisible ink have communicated life-changing information and documented important historical events ever since.

However, even historians might be surprised to learn that since the beginning of time humanity has also been documenting personal life events using invisible ink without even realizing it.

As an amateur anthropologist and through self-examination, I recently discovered how invisible ink has been used to create tattoos on the human body. Unfortunately, we are often unaware when a new mark has been made on us.

Traditional Tattoos

Full disclosure: I have no tattoos…yet. At least not the kind you see proudly presented on a bulging bicep or discreetly divulged only if someone knows you extremely well.
